Billion Dollar Friction As Binance Founder Calls Out Musk After Massive Security Breach

Tensions flared between two of the most influential figures in tech and finance this week after Binance cofounder Changpeng Zhao urged Elon Musk to cease his public mockery following a devastating security breach at the cryptocurrency exchange. The conflict ignited on X, where Musk responded to news of a 6.3 billion dollar hack targeting the platform with a string of dismissive emojis, including laughing and grimacing faces. For Zhao, the timing of these posts was poorly judged given the scale of the crisis currently facing the world’s largest crypto exchange.

Zhao did not take the trolling lightly, reminding the SpaceX and Tesla chief that their business interests are deeply intertwined. He pointed specifically to Binance’s equity stake in Musk’s ventures, noting that an earlier investment related to the Twitter acquisition has grown into a holding worth over a billion dollars. While admitting he holds significant respect for Musk, Zhao explicitly asked him to stop the jokes and offer some support instead during such a volatile period for the firm.

This digital spat is far from an isolated incident, as the two leaders have a long history of trading jabs online. Back in 2021, when Binance temporarily halted Dogecoin withdrawals due to technical issues, Musk labeled the move shady. Zhao quickly retaliated by bringing up a massive Tesla vehicle recall caused by similar software and hardware glitches, proving that neither man is inclined to back down when provoked.

The current friction comes as Binance struggles to contain the fallout from what investigators believe was an attack by TraderTraitor, a hacking unit linked to North Korea. Although deposits have since been restored after an initial freeze on all transactions, approximately 3 billion dollars in assets remain locked while officials work through the aftermath of one of the industry’s most significant thefts.
